“What is PGROW?” you may ask. If you’re feeling stuck in a rut, experiencing dissatisfaction, or sensing a disconnect with your work, and you’re longing to rediscover your professional purpose and need a compass to find your way forward, then my journey of transition will offer you some ideas for moving ahead.
Most transitions consist of a series of sprints until one finds the marathon they want to run. This process can take time. Mine has taken over 30 months and is still evolving. Of course, if you’re lucky, it can be just a few days, weeks, or months.
Over the years, I’ve come to accept that this will be a process one needs to go through every time there’s a serious pivot in their career. To regain a sense of control, I’ve utilized a very simple tool to help me navigate this journey. Let’s call it PGROW, or Professional Goal; Current Reality; Options; and Way Forward. I first encountered a variant of this process at Thomson Reuters and have adapted it for over 15+ years.
First, identify your immediate professional goals, assess your current reality, and understand and accept it, warts, and all! Then, identify the gap between your current reality and your goal, then explore some options for moving ahead, and finally, select a path forward. Voila, PGROW!
Before starting the exercise, let me share a story of how I used it first: I was in Axa, and I had a new boss. My professional goal was to learn from him and deliver to the best of my ability.
My reality was that he had been brought in after I had delivered a lot. As a director in the company explained, “S, you have broken a lot of eggs to deliver what you have. So even though you are more than capable of growing the organization, people may not positively support you”.
The new person had a lot to offer, yet I was used to a lot of freedom in the way I operated.
