From “INTRODUCTION”
"Hey Anil, can I skip tomorrow's ride? I'm not very comfortable with the idea of riding a motorcycle in gravel and slush."
The man conversing with me was one of the riders on a group tour in the Himalayas that I was leading. I looked at him closely and noticed he was wearing the best possible motorcycle gear that money could buy. He had a machine that had the capability to conquer any kind of terrain.
To my understanding, that motorcycle would have burnt an enormous hole in his pocket too. Yet, he was not ready to face the battle. The fear of the unknown was holding him back from exploring new challenges.
I gently smiled at him and said, "Don't contemplate too much. Join the ride irrespective of what happens. At any point of time, if you feel you can't do it any further, then stop the bike right there. I'll ensure that the backup van will accompany you back to the base safely."
Quite reluctantly, he joined the ride the following day. To my surprise, he managed to do the entire circuit and enjoyed the process thoroughly. I had no idea that this incident changed his life drastically.
That very evening around the campfire somewhere in the Himalayas, when we were all sitting together, he walked towards me and said, "Hey, thank you for pushing me.
I was terrified of what was ahead. I was afraid of the unknown. I thought I'll fail. In fact, even in my personal life, I generally tend to worry or avoid the unknown. But what you made me do this morning changed my life. I'm going to go back and join my wife in scaling her small business. I'm done with being afraid of the unknown and living my life in perpetual fear."
From that moment, I saw him walking confidently and determined. I saw the sparkle of optimism in his eyes to face the world no matter what it offered. It seemed like he had an epiphany. One that let him face his fears. I saw that hunger to flourish and not live by being scared.
His fear was the darkness that prevented him from seeing things from a different angle and exploring new possibilities.
A year later, when I spoke with him, I was thrilled to hear that his wife had made significant progress in the business with his active support.
