Excerpt
From “Everyone Co-Owns the Dream”
Imbibe the spirit “what is the most important problem faced by my customer, how can I provide an efficient solution and what needs to be done to make my customer
succeed?”
Let us begin this chapter with a famous quote on customers attributed to Mahatma
Gandhi. An authentic confirmation that he said these words does not exist anywhere in the vast collections of his writings. However, the quote is so powerful and relevant to our subject that we reproduce it here to build upon the concepts further.
"A Customer is the most important visitor on our premises.
He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.
He is not an interruption to our work. He is the purpose of it.
He is not an outsider to our business. He is a part of it.
We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by allowing us to do so." So, how important is the customer for a start-up or any business? The answer would be "utmost important". Some even extend that to say that customer is the only thing that matters, and everything else can be managed. Interestingly, the words in the quote "not an outsider but a part of our business" convey the same spirit of the customer being a part of the stakeholders' spectrum discussed in this book.
When one thinks of any start-up, two immediate questions that come to mind are:
1)what does the start-up do? and
2) who is the potential customer for what it does?
Marketing experts would even advise to process these questions in the reverse order, i.e., start with (2) first and then work backwards to decide on (1).
So, the significance of customers may need no further elaboration. Of course, in this
book, we elevate it to the next level by making them one of the pillars of the start-up
structure and stakeholders' spectrum. When you share your vision and dream with the customers and execute the core processes related to customers with perfection, you lay the foundation for successful long-term relationships.
